Topia Custom Software Solutions is proud to support the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility. We feel it is critically important on economic and safety grounds to retire Nuclear Power Stations in California, and form a disposal plan for the large amount of nuclear waste already stored in our state.
Nuclear power plants are always going to be expensive to develop, maintain, and decommission, compared with alternatives. When all the added costs due to premature failure of components like the failing Steam Generators are taken into account, Nuclear power is a bad deal for the state and its electricity ratepayers.
Independent of the costs of nuclear power to-date, the costs of disposal of the highly radioactive nuclear waste continue to rise with no end in sight. Yucca mountain might never take the waste that should already be stored there. Spent fuel pools are clearly unsafe, according to a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences. Even dry-cask storage, though marginally safer than the densely packed spent fuel pools, leaves much room for improvement.
We appreciate the work done by the Alliance to educate residents of our state and prevent relicensing of nuclear plants beyond their current operating licenses.
