A FEW OF OUR OUTREACH AND EDUCATION SUCCESSES
- Three Chernobyl 20th Anniversary memorial events in San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles, and San Diego
- Joint participation with the Apollo Alliance, Environmental Health Coalition and San Diego Regional Energy Center, Unitarian Fellowship, Joan Kroc Peace and Justice Center, League of Women Voters on nuclear forums.
- Worked closely with a coalition of organizations across the country on issues of security, relicensing, Tritium leaks, aging components….
- Co-sponsored two events featuring Dr. Helen Caldicott in San Diego
- Met with supervisors in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and San Francisco and the cities of Morro Bay and Chula Vista to gain support for cost, benefit and risk analysis of reliance on aging nuclear plants.
- Met with local, state and federal representatives and provided frequent updates on issues of security, relicensing and costs of continued dependence on aging nuclear plants. In early December, we met with staff of Senator Feinstein in LA, Assemblyman Blakeslee, Senator Kehoe, the California Energy Commission and Senator Boxer to assure nuclear issues were on their radar screens for legislation and oversight in 2007.
- The Alliance’ Executive Director as a member of the National Sierra Club Radiation Committee met with the S.C. Strategy team in Kansas City, Missouri. The result is national Club support for our efforts to address relicensing in California. In addition, a federal amendment on Energy Bill and nuclear subsidies had great support.
- Co-filed with Sierra Club in PG&E’s application for $14 million of ratepayer funding for an in-house feasibility “study” of license renewal. Our argument is to deny any ratepayer funding for this PG&E relicensing study until the California Energy Commission has completed, adopted and implemented the analysis of the economic impacts of continued reliance on aging nuclear plants in our state.
- Alliance board member met with representatives of Indian Pt. and Oyster Creek organizations on the East Coast to discuss commonality of issues – excellent resources.
- Article by Alliance board member Shirley Vaine, a real estate broker in San Diego was printed in the San Diego Realtor magazine (10,000 professionals) on disclosure of property sold near nuclear plants.
- Op Eds on issues on nuclear power fallacies were printed in a dozen papers. ANR was cited in over 57 articles in 2006. Radio and television media, especially outside SLO consistently contact ANR for comments on nuclear issues.
- ANR has spoken at Rotary Club meetings in San Diego and Pismo Beach.
- Participated in national Precautionary Principle workshop in Maryland and met with Lois Gibons (Love Canal) on organizing. We were also so very lucky to have dinner with the wonderful Diane Curran (attorney who led the 9th Circuit win).
- Organized and participated in an Energy Working Group workshop on nuclear power and Waste in San Diego.
