Participation is vital at upcoming CPUC meetings on operation of San Onofre
The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station will close and the production of high-level radioactive waste will cease by 2014 if steam generators are not replaced.
A demonstation of solidarity to deny the expensive replacement of steam generators at San Onofre could lead to a cessation to the production of radioactive waste on California's coast.
The California Public Utilities Commission has invited public comments on the economic and environmental costs of replacing steam generators at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). To replace these large aging components, Edison must cut a 28 foot by 28 foot hole in each reactor vessel. These reactors will leave Orange and San Diego county residents vulnerable during the duration of the steam generator replacement project.
If steam generators are not found to be in the best interest of Edison, SDG&E, Anaheim and Riverside ratepayers this nuclear facility must be replaced by 2014. Steam generator replacement would mean an additional 10 to 30+ years of high-level radioactive waste production and storage on fragile and vulnerable earthquake active coastal bluffs. The economic and environmental risks far outweigh the benefits, but so far the CPUC has been judging this case with blinders on.
It is time to look into the eyes of our precious children and grandchildren and speak out for a sane energy policy in California. Public meetings: LINK
