YES WE CAN!!
Four aging reactors sit on California's fragile coast. Two are in Southern California and two are on the Central Coast. The licenses for all four reactors expire in the mid-2020's and yet, even today, the maintenance and replacement of failing components is proving to be rather costly. Add to this the large number of retiring nuclear workers and the loss of their decades of expertise, plus the costs of securing reactor sites and the future transport of highly radioactive waste and we see an industry already overwhelmed and challenged to the brink.
Thankfully, it is possible to phase-out all four reactors in the next fifteen years. Our state has begun to analyze the costs of California's reliance on nuclear power and highlights the uncertainties and unknowns of dependence on this expensive generation source.
We are in an unprecedented position to say “no” to nuclear license renewals before the applications can be filed, and we need your help.
This has been an historic election year and all our new legislators and representatives need to know that this issue is important to our national security, our energy independence and building our economy. Resources diverted to prop up aging reactors or subsidize new reactors are resources unavailable to invest in innovative efficiency technology and implementation of clean renewable generation. We can put our state and our returning veterans to work learning how to create a new energy paradigm for California. We can lead the nation in demonstrating that a clean energy path is an economical, job-creating way to invest in our state and our country.
To achieve this goal, we are asking our supporters to invest in:
- $24,000 - for a half-time dedicated staff person for outreach and education
- $5,000 - an organizer for a youth movement to oppose nuclear power. (Right now the youth of America are motivated and believe they should be part of our nation's solutions to energy and other problems in our country. It's time to tap into that motivation and help them to get our message out to the next generation who will lead the clean energy movement)
- $10,000 - travel and outreach expenses for A4NR's non-paid executive director to gather nationwide public and political support for our mission to phase out aging reactors when their licenses expire.
We can phase out nuclear power. We can create new jobs and exciting technology to reduce consumption and “green” our energy path. We can stop the production of highly radioactive waste on our coast in our children’s lifetimes. And we can celebrate the holidays together on Dec 6, 2008 at our annual Peace Potato Party
YES WE CAN!!
In Peace and Hope during this Thanksgiving month
And in gratitude for your support
