NUCLEAR POWER, FRANCE HALTS TRICASTIN POWER STATION

(AGI) - Lyon, 11 July. - The French nuclear safety agencies have asked the company owned by the Areva Socatri group to temporarily stop operations at the treatment plant for the Tricastin power station is the south of France. On Monday it was discovered that the plants were leaking water which contained Uranium and which was running off into the surrounding rivers. The authorities of the region in question have asked the residents not to drink the water or to eat the fish and has forbidden bathing in the contaminated waters. "We will install measures" said the spokesperson for Socatri, "in order to insure that these accidents don't happen again". The Tricastin installation is one of the 58 nuclear plants in France and is located 5 kilometres from Avignon. In the meantime, today a fire destroyed the roof of the turbine in the Righals nuclear power plant in Switzerland. The safety crews immediately acted and assured the public that the situation was under control. The plant at Ringhals is in the south west of Switzerland and is owned by Vattenfall. The German E.On also has a stake in the company.
