NEW YORK: The United Nations nuclear watchdog has called for a "thorough and transparent" investigation into the radioactive leak at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant after an earthquake rocked northern coast of Japan's largest island Honshu on July 16.

In this context, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has offered to send a team of international experts to join the country's effort in assessing the consequences of the tremors.

Early data shows that tremors may have exceeded the plant's seismic design assumption, the agency said, adding that it is "closely monitoring" the situation at the power plant.

Tokyo Electric Company had said about 400 barrels containing low-level radioactive waste were knocked over by the powerful 6.8 magnitude quake and their lids had come off the 40 of them.

The mayor ordered the facility closed until its safety could be confirmed.
