FOCUSED ON REDUCING RADIOACTIVE FOOTPRINTS IN 2008

WE CAN'T DO THIS ALONE - DONATE NOW

A Message from Rochelle

There is no radioactive moss growing under the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility’s feet this year and we welcome you all to join us whenever possible (see below).

We are also beginning a new component to our website and newsletter to let our supporters know why other supporters generously give of their time and resources

"I happen to be on sound financial footing as the result of disability payments for an injury incurred while I was in the Marine Corps. I was raised with the belief that sharing and generosity are virtues that should be cultivated when one is on such footing. I recognize that my existence on earth will be brief when compared to the half life of radioactive waste created by nuclear power generation. I am concerned for those who will come after me, and wish to share my good fortune with those who follow by making contributions to stem and terminate the production of radioactive poisons that may otherwise be, for all practical purposes, eternal environmental hazards." - Greg O’Kelly, San Luis Obispo, CA

"As one who cherishes our beautiful California environments, I know we must be vigilant to pro-safety and that of future generations in the name of profit. As a former Atomic Energy Commission Nuclear Materials Compliance Officer, I can attest that not all nuclear licensees disclose leaks, spills and releases of radioactive materials. If citizen groups do not maintain a close, involved surveillance of this 65 year old technology who will? To maintain this vigilance is why I support the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility. If you believe that our precious coast is worth protecting, along with our heritage, contribute whatever you can, whenever you can. I do because I think it’s an investment in our future." - Sam Casalina, PhD, CIH Arroyo Grande, CA

Where Alliance efforts will be focused in 2008:

Identifying research studies to be included in the states analysis addressing the economic impacts of California’s reliance on aging reactors, especially in earthquake zones. Soon the Energy Commission will post all reports it is reviewing on its website. Many of these reports were brought to their attention by the Alliance. http://a4nr.org/library/07.2007-cechearings/

Ensuring that five-million ratepayer dollars are not wasted funding a utility study of license renewal for San Onofre – current licenses expire 2022 and the Alliance invited Sierra Club, Environment California Research & Policy Center, CALPIRG and California Church IMPACT to co-intervene and make enhance our participation – all agreed to join us. http://a4nr.org/articles/02.20.2008-rochelleoped

Evenings with the award winning author and co-founder of Code Pink, Diane Wilson in San Luis Obispo on April 1st and 2nd http://a4nr.org/news-and-events/04.01.2008-dianewilson and http://a4nr.org/news-and-events/04.02.2008-dianewilsonreception and San Diego April 5th. http://a4nr.org/news-and-events/matters-of-controversy-special-guest-diane-wilson

Educating California residents and representatives about the Department of Energy’s plan to train 12% of the nation’s radioactive waste through California – this does not include California reactors. (A4NR http://a4nr.org/library/transportation/2007.12-doecomments/view and H.O.M.E. http://www.h-o-m-e.org/Yucca/index.htm.) Ask for letters to Feinstein (http://a4nr.org/library/transportation/02.2008-feinsteinltr/view" and Boxer (http://a4nr.org/library/transportation/02.2008-boxerltrreies/view) requesting EIS be held in abeyance until the conditions of the National Environmental Policy Act and Nuclear Waste Policy Been met.

Protect against another attempt to overturn California nuclear safeguard laws (AB 1776 http://www.aroundthecapitol.com/Bills/AB_1776). – The Alliance has contacted other environmental, religious and consumer organizations to write letters in opposition to this bill to allow new nuclear reactors to be sited in California. Our letter is attached and we encourage you to copy and add any comments of your own and send by the end of March 2008. http://a4nr.org/library/06.2007-devoreinitiative/03.01.08-ltroppose1776/view

Creating a documentary David Weisman, the Alliance’s outstanding documentary film maker and incredible outreach coordinator is producing the first complete film project addressing all shortfalls of a so called “nuclear renaissance and promo clips can be seen at: http://www.texaslegacy.org/bb/narrators/freemandavid.html

If you know of others who share our goals please forward our newsletter. And if you are interested in joining in one or more of the above and would like to attend a local meeting let us know. Please contact Rochelle Becker - beckers@thegrid.net - or David Weisman - davidweisman@charter.net. If you would like to volunteer to help keep the website up-to-date (and we do need someone to help out) please contact Molly Johnson shutdowndiablo@gmail.com

The Alliance invites our supporters to share with us what you believe to be the economic and health-costs, benefits, and risks of allowing continuing Diablo Canyon and San Onofre to operate twenty years beyond current license terms. The analysis includes the “temporary” radioactive waste storage facilities according to the California Coastal Commission will remain on our coast in perpetuity.

  • Earthquakes May Endanger New York More Than Thought; Nuclear Power Plant Seen As Particular Risk
A study by a group of prominent seismologists suggests that a pattern of subtle but active faults makes the risk of earthquakes to the New York City area substantially greater than formerly believed. Among other things, they say that the controversial Indian Point nuclear power plants, 24 miles north of the city, sit astride the previously unidentified intersection of two active seismic zones.

  • Progress Energy will ask for rate hike in Florida
Progress Energy Florida will ask the state to approve a 31 percent customer rate hike partly to help pay for two new nuclear power plants. The company said Friday the increase will amount to an extra $34.27 monthly for a user of 1,000 kilowatt hours. If approved by the state Public Service Commission later this year, the hike will take effect in January.

France is proud of having the world's most developed nuclear energy infrastructure, but a series of incidents at the Tricastin nuclear power plant has shaken its self-confidence. Is public sentiment about nuclear power about to shift? The winegrowers have already made their move. No longer will they label their product Côteaux du Tricastin. Why? Because the name Tricastin is slowly beginning to stand for something far removed from fine wine.

  • Efficiency, renewable energy are much cheaper than nukes
When Arjun Makhijani talks about generating electricity with nuclear power, he knows of what he speaks. His Ph.D. is from UC-Berkeley in nuclear engineering, and he has authored numerous books on energy, including the first evaluation conducted of energy efficiency potential in the U.S. economy. His most recent tome, “Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free,” is a no-nonsense policy guide for ending our dependence on fossil fuels without incurring massive debt — and courting potential disaster — by expanding our nuclear-generation capacity.

  • Nuclear Recycling Fails the Test
Over the past few years, attention to the recycling of nuclear power spent fuel has grown. Fears of global warming due to fossil fuel burning have given nuclear energy a boost; over the next 15 years dozens of new power reactors are planned world-wide. To promote nuclear energy, the Bush administration is seeking to establish international spent nuclear fuel recycling centers that are supposed to reduce wastes, recycle uranium, and convert nuclear explosive materials, such as plutonium to less troublesome elements in advanced power reactors.
