Tsunami threat to Diablo Canyon revisited….
The Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility has been actively involved in bringing to light a long-suppressed study of the tsunami threat to the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. Originally commissioned by the NRC for the 2003 licensing of the spent fuel storage installation at Diablo Canyon, its contents were redacted by the NRC for more than a decade. At the third anniversary of the Fukushima disaster, when reporters unveiled a tranche of NRC internal emails, A4NR outreach coordinator David Weisman found a passing reference to this tsunami study and tracked down its author, Dr. Robert Sewell. Sewell, a noted authority in the field, had done the study under contract to the NRC, and was powerless to release or comment on it. By increasing the visibility of this “invisible” study, A4NR and subsequently others gained its release. The study refutes PG&E’s claim that Diablo Canyon’s perch 85 feet above sea level renders it immune from tsunami threat.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission releases a tsunami assessment of Diablo Canyon 11 years later
When New Times reached out to Sewell with questions about the report, he said in an email “my report stands on its own, and I am confident that those who carefully review it will find it to be appropriate and valid.”
